PEARL - Country recording artist Eric Church will perform a free concert 6 p.m. Tuesday on the Hinds Community College Rankin Campus.

The concert will be limited to 100 ticketholders, about half to be students on the Rankin Campus. The other tickets are being given away by US 96.3 Country radio station, one of the hosts of the free concert.

The concert will be in the George Wynne Hall lecture room.

Church’s songs speak plainly about the human condition in the vein of such greats as Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings to John Prine and Steve Earle.

“Honesty is my number one responsibility,” Church said. “If you listen to this, you’ll find out who I am.

Church grew up in Granite Falls, N.C., in an area known as one of the world’s furniture capitals. He recalls being four years old, standing on a table at a local restaurant, singing “Elvira” to a waitress and a handful of patrons who would reward him with change.

“I was 13 when I started writing,” he says. “It was before I learned to play guitar. I had a lot in me that I wanted to get out, and I started writing lyrics and singing, and I thought, ‘If I’m going to play these for people, I’m going to have to learn how to play guitar.’” He bought a cheap, hard-to-tune one and taught himself to play, influenced by his parents’ eclectic tastes, which stretched from Motown to bluegrass.

A talented athlete, he played basketball, baseball and golf in high school, but in college, he turned to music, riding those early gigs to regional acclaim and then a trip to Nashville.

“I wanted to move two years before I graduated,” he said, “but my dad made me a deal. He said, ‘If you’ll graduate, I’ll pay for your first six months in Nashville,’ which I thought was a pretty good offer. I graduated with a degree in marketing and he was true to his word.”

His family and his small-town background had given him a diamond-pure work ethic, which served him well. “I just kind of threw muscle into the writing, so we had a large pool to draw from when it came time to record,” he said. “I think I demoed 60 or 70 songs at Sony last year, and you probably demo one out of every four you write, so I wrote a lot. I figure they’re paying me to be a songwriter and that’s what I’m here to do.”

He began getting cuts, including Terri Clark’s “The World Needs a Drink.” Then, Arthur Buenahora at Sony Tree introduced Eric to producer Jay Joyce; the two clicked instantly, and began cutting demos.

“The night I got the record deal with Capitol was a really good gig,” he says. “I knew that whether I got the deal or not, this was as good as I could do. It clicked. You just have those nights. During ‘Lightning,’ the whole crowd was hushed and I knew they were listening. I knew they were with me on the song, and there’s nothing as great as a performer as to capture the crowd.

Two days later, on his birthday, he was in Capitol’s office being offered a recording deal; he and Joyce then set about capturing his essence in Joyce’s basement studio. The result is a CD that launches Church with a firm identity both musically and lyrically, and gives him his own niche in a diverse country landscape.

hinds happenings (:

As President of Student Government, I wanted to let everyone out there know of a couple of events we’re sponsoring for all of you! Living in the dorms myself, I know how sometimes you need something to fill in the time, during the day or night. So, how’s this…the second annual Hinds Idol and a Student Health Fair?? Both are definitely worth checking out!

My senator over Hinds Idol is going the extra mile this year to make the second annual Hinds Idol a snazzy production and competition. Auditions just finished up and wheels are turning to get the show under way. If you’re a fan of American Idol, be sure to mark down Tuesday, March 24th on your calendar! The show will be at 7:00 PM in Cain Cochran Hall and will only cost you $2 with your Hinds ID. Last year’s was crazy and fun, and this year is steppin’ it up another notch!

Ok, so I know a Health Fair doesn’t sound near as exciting as Hinds Idol, but trust me, you gotta give it a shot…On April 15th from 9:00 AM to 1 PM, there will be booths and guest speakers on various health issues that we as students may be facing. Also, on the evenings of the 14th through the 16th, there will be different programs in the dorms on health issues, so if you’re stuck in the dorm or hanging around, go check them out! Who knows what kinds of interesting stuff you may learn?!

Social Textbooking … Yeah, it’s cool!

With the implementation of Web 2.0 all over the Web, there are some cool sites out there giving students and others awesome access to textbooks. Take a look:

Chegg (www.chegg.com)

Students can RENT books from this site at costs well below purchase cost. There’s even an option to buy at the end of the rental period. And, if they work with a school, they’ll kick back 10-12 percent of the sales to the institution. How cool is that?!

Campus Book Swap (www.campusbookswap.com)

This is a bulletin board allowing students to buy and sell textbooks. Pretty neat idea!

Flat World Knowledge (www.flatworldknowledge.com)

This site allows instructors to select FREE textbooks written and reviewed by experts. Teachers can mix and match chapters, and even add their OWN content. Cool!

today’s thoughts…

ok, you may or may not know, but i’m president of the associated student government on campus. hhhmm….bet you’re going to say: we have one of those? what is it? basically a collection of representatives from the various clubs and organizations that meet weekly to discuss activities and problems on campus, etc. that weekly meeting is counted as a one hour credit, and is used to teach leadership and organizational skills. we have some neat speakers and are currently teaching something called habitudes [google it ;) ]

the advisors and i [michelle davison, mark stanton, and dr. blankenship] are trying to revamp ASG, and the process is going to be a slow one…but it’s off to a dandy start i do believe :) we changed rooms, made the meetings more formal [more like government], are inviting more speakers to come, and are even going to go to the capital in a couple of weeks! we are trying to be more effective on campus and hopefully you will see us wearing our ASG t-shirts when we do events on or off campus.

by the way, any student can come sit in on an ASG meeting without being enrolled in the class. you are most welcome to come and have some input in what is going on around campus or present an issue or problem you have…we meet at 2:00 every tuesday afternoon in the reserve lounge [top floor of student union building] come see what we’re all about!

peace out ;)

this is my study break…

2 more days :) pure bliss comes with that thought…. FREEDOM!

i currently need to be studying for my french && philosophy finals tomorrow…i’ll get to that though…had to take a break && throw a vegetable steamer in the microwave to eat while drink my pomegranate green tea [ha no; i'm not vegan....just tryin' to eat healthier]

i must say it was quite exhilirating to finish trig today [horribly boring class] && then go sell 3 books && get $136 for them [cash was runnin a lil low...] :D again…freedom!

the freezing cold wetness wasn’t that great [along with the fact that everywhere else BUT here got snow!]; however, i wore my super cool rainboots && got to walk where no one else did…happy happy joy joy :) you should get some ha; they come in quite handy

i’m going to see a movie this weekend-which one? good Q. my guy friend i’m going with gave me 3 choices that interested him, none of which interested me: the new james bond [seen it; ugh]. the transporter [supposedly ok but pointless]. && the punisher [from what i hear; horribly bloody. gory. violent=geez] so…should i still stick to my plan of being selfless && going to what makes him happy? or should i be selfish && make him go to a movie i like but he wouldn’t have fun at? i’m sure there is compromise…ha the middle path between the 2 extremes as the Buddha puts it [meaning philosophy is calling...]

btw; once school is done with, i get to read alot. && whatever i want :)

i wish i were a little girl again

to be a child again-
when everywhere was a playground
and everything a toy.

when your biggest worry
was missing cartoons
and the monster under your bed
your biggest fear.

when you went to church
and everyone was perfect
and Jesus was a cartoon
in your Sunday school lesson.

if only I was a child
when boys were icky
and the only thing they broke
was your Barbie doll.

how things have changed…

i miss those days. there were no research papers. no scholarships or applications. no meetings or practices. everyone seemed nice && fun. your world consisted of play. no bills. no relationship issues. no GPA’s. no “religion.” no responsibilities; demands; requirements; deadlines. the biggest trouble i might get in would be sneaking extra cookies at snack time. now…consequences can affect the rest of your life. the world no longer seems to be a place of wonder && delight, but a vacuum that sucks the life right out of you. [ha i have to apologize for my cynicism today; i'm an artist && child at heart...today's just not my day]

welcome to the real world.

well; really just the front steps…

doesn’t help that i’m somewhat of an overachiever too…tsk tsk…

so, i just suck it up && move on. be a big girl about it. can’t run to daddy with my scraped knee; just scrounge up a band-aid and keep running. the pain will go away eventually. agree?

here’s to the good ole days…of tree houses, mud pies, cowboys, play house, patty cake, and so many other simple child-loves…

[insert creative title here]

so. let’s give this a shot people.

amongst all of the other things i write comes a blog…the topic of which i don’t know yet…we’re getting there.

due to the amount of formal papers i’m required to write, my blogs will not resemble an essay

my blog=thoughts [but thoughts in some sort of order]

biggest deal on everyone’s minds is our new president. the recent election. our messed up economy. issues issues issues….well, one man, no matter who it is, can fix this nation or come even close. props to everyone that went and voted. record high. it was my first time; i felt special :) ha. i don’t even know where to begin with our economy [who does??] yes; history has been made. but blessings aren’t going to rain down from heaven, nor is the earth going to crash down around us by this one man entering our white house. i am not particular to politics or government so you won’t get much from me on the matter…

if you haven’t taken philosophy, do it. it is highly intriguing. sometimes mind boggling.

pay attention to nature. it’s absolutely gorgeous. right now, when the sun shines through the fall leaves, it blazes like fire. the trees are losing their summer cloaks. it’s time to die. i hate winter for that reason. but i realized that everything must die to live. a seed is planted in the ground and dies > out comes life a little while later…each season is unique and necessary. just like in our lives…don’t forget that.

&& right now i must admit: for a writer; i’m tired of writing. so:

au revoir ;)

Success … it works!

In the midst of summer school classes, high temperatures and an occassional thunderstorm, things are moving smoothly at the Raymond Campus. The food in the cafeteria has been pleasant thus far, and there’s always a friendly face to talk to in the mess hall.

With the high temps, I’m hoping to go and burn off some calories on the track … I’m always looking for running buddies! :)
